What to Do in the First 24 Hours After Water Damage

Published: 2026-03-25 09:00:00

The first 24 hours after water damage matter most. Start by shutting off the water source if it is safe to do so, then cut power to affected areas only if you can reach the breaker without stepping through standing water. Move furniture, rugs, and valuables away from the wet area, and begin documenting the damage with photos and short notes for your records.

Next, call a licensed water damage restoration specialist as soon as possible. Rapid extraction and drying help protect drywall, subfloors, insulation, and framing from long term deterioration. If the area stayed wet for more than a day, treat mold prevention as urgent, not optional. The sooner the space is dried and cleaned, the better the outcome for your home and your insurance claim.
